YOG Singapore 2010

Mark English came 9th in an extremely fast 1000m boys final at Bishan stadium this morning. Eleven athletes qualified for the final, and English's finished 2:24:95. Ethiopia's Mohamed Geleto won in a time of 2:19:54.

Ryan Burnett has guaranteed himself and his country a medal at the first ever World Youth Olympic. Burnett defeated Zohidion Hoorbyev 2-1 in a very tense semi final. Burnett was the more positive and continually tried to out wit his defensive opponent.

Ireland Youth Olympic hockey team defeated South Africa 1-0 this evening through a single goal scored from open play by Lucy McKee.

Irish athletes compete today in Modern Pentathlon, Boxing, Sailing and Athletics.

Ryan Burnett is through to the Youth Olympic Light Fly Weight semi final after he comfortably defeated Kirylenka of Belarus. Burnett got off to a great start leading 3-0 after the first round and never looked in any trouble eventually winning by a 12-0 margin.

Emily Greenan qualified Ireland a place in the Youth Olympic Games modern pentathlon competition in June 2010. Coming into the event she was ranked twenty fourth, but due to an excellent swim, and combined shoot and run moved up the rankings to finish a very respectful 21st in her first major competition at this level.

Ireland suffered another bitter pill today conceding late in the game in the third consecutive occasion putting them out of contention for a medal at the YOG in Singapore this morning.

Not everyone has the chance to chat with sporting legends, so consider the young athletes of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) a lucky bunch. Those who attended the Chat With Champions session got to hear from top Olympic pole-vaulters – Russian Yelena Isinbayeva and Ukrainian Sergey Bubka.

Sophie Murphy is representing Ireland in the girls Byte C11 sailing event at the Youth Olympic Games 2010 Singapore and supported by her coach Thomas Chaix.

The Youth Olympic Village (YOV) is the home for 5,000 athletes and team officials taking part in Singapore 2010, from 10 to 28 August 2010 for 18 days.
