Introduction to Shooting Sports
Shooting has appeared on every Olympic program except St Louis 1904 and Amsterdam 1928. The number and variety of events have changed many times over the Olympiads. Ireland has had a regular and strong presence in the shooting sports at the Olympics going back to early participation in the rifle and shotgun events.
Burnett joint 8th at ISSF World Cup
Ireland’s Derek Burnett reached a season best to finish joint 8th in the Men’s Trap event at the ISSF World Cup Shooting event at Maribor Slovenia. Burnett who along with team mates Wayne Byrne and David Malone competed at the last World Cup event of 2011 which drew a world record attendance of over 592 athletes from 77 countries.
Gary Duff loses out on medal by narrowest of margins.
Atlanta Olympian Gary Duff was narrowly pipped for a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Tuesday 12th October. Gary who was representing Northern Ireland alongside compatriot Matthew Hall in the Men's 50m Prone Rifle pairs were narrowly beaten by the Australian pairing of Beijing bronze medal and joint World Record holder: Warren Potent and David Clifton by just three centre tens.
London 2012 qualification competitions announced
The International Shooting Sport Federation has announced the 2011 World Cup Series calendar. Shotgun shooters will open the season in Chile, at the beginning of March, while Rifle and Pistol shooters will follow in Sydney, where the only combined World Cup of the season will kick-off on the 21st of March.
Air Rifle Silver in London
Sisters Paula and Laura Cunningham displayed impressive form in the GB 18th Junior International competition at the Lord Robert's Centre in Bisley, London.
European Bronze for shooting
Ireland's three-time Olympian Derek Burnett completed an excellent final to finish in the bronze medal position in the Olympic Trap shooting event at the European Olympic Shooting Championships in Kasan, Russia.

World class performance by Murphy at ISSF World Championships
A 7th place finish for Ireland's Philip Murphy on a score of 122 following a very high scoring competition which saw scores of 124, 123 and 122 make the final.
Team Silver at San Marino World Cup
Coming off the back of a recent strong performance in Minsk, a final round score of 24 saw Irelands Derek Burnett finish one target short of a place in what would have been his second consecutive ISSF World Cup Final as today's Olympic Trap competition concluded in San Marino.
Burnett finishes 5th in ISSF World Cup Minsk
Irish Olympian Derek Burnett made the final in the ISSF World Cup at Minsk, Belarus with a convincing qualification performance of 118. During the final Burnett scored steadily for a round of 23 and moved up one position in a charged and very competitive final which was won by Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo. Burnett was unfortunate to miss a shoot off for the bronze medal by a single target. Ireland's Philip Murphy finished just outside the final cut off with an impressive joint 8th on 116.
