Aileen Morrison achieved the best result by an Irish triathlete to date after her second place finish at the Madrid ITU Triathlon World Series on Saturday afternoon.

Morrison, already confident of Olympic qualification, was using the race to sharpen her fitness and test herself against the best triathletes in the world ahead of the Olympic showdown in Hyde Park on August 4th.

Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig pulled away down the home straight to replicate her win here in 2010 while Morrison achieved her best WTS result in second with Barbara Riveros Diaz of Chile third. “I can’t believe I managed to hold on for second, ” said Morrison. “I’m really delighted with that.”

Triathlon Ireland’s High Performance Director Chris Jones was impressed with what he saw. “She ran really well today quickly making up the time lost out of T2. We were giving her feedback throughout the run and she continued to push on and put the others under pressure.”

“Sprig and Diaz are two of the best sprinters in the sport so for Aileen to come away with 2nd is an incredible performance.”
